Projectiles, Fuses, Rockets, Pyro, Grenades Flashcards
M Horn
A fuze is armed when:
All the safety devices and features incorporated in the fuze have been eliminated but has not begun it’s firing sequence
Define arming
When a fuze is changing from a safe to armed condition
Define boresafe
Fuze is not capable of detonating until it leaves the bore of the weapon
What is Firing?
the action initiating the explosive train in the fuze
What is a pistol?
A mechanism containing a heavy firing pin or striker, but has no explosive components
Define cocked striker
A firing pin that is held in a cocked position under spring tension
Describe acceleration/setback forces in a fuse.
Incorporates the the rearward movement of the fuse parts caused by forward acceleration during it’s launching.
What are the common terms for cocked striker?
- Cocked detonator
- Cocked firing pin
- Firing pin under spring tension
- Hung strike
- Hung detonator
- Hung firing pin
What is a lead?
A component used to transmit a detonation from one detonating component to a succeeding HE component.
Name 4 forces that can act on a fuze
- Centrifugal
- Creep
- Setback
- Inertia
What are the two types of Proximity fuzes?
-Active
-Passive
What are the main components of a projectile?
-Fuse-Ogive-Bourrelet-Body-Driving band-Base Plate
What does the bourrelet do?
Bears on the rifling and aids in centring and guiding the projectile in the gun barrel
What is the cannelure on a projectile?
Grooves between or after the rotating bands used to clean the bore of the weapon of material from the rotating bands.
Projectiles fall into 5 catergories, what are they?
- High Explosive
- Carrier
- Shot
- Practice
- Dummy/drill
HE projectiles can be categories as?
- Frag/blast
- HEAT
- HESH
- Armour Piercing/Semi-Armour Piercing
How do APDS shot projectiles work?
The projectile is a smaller hard dense alloy with a sabot encasing to allow it to be fired in a larger barrel. The sabot is discarded after firing of the post or petal type.
What does APDSFS stand for?
Armour piercing discarding sabot fin stabilised
What is a HERA projectile?
High explosive rocket assisted
Name 5 or more carrier projectile payloads
- Smoke/WP
- Flare/illumination
- Incendiary
- Chemical
- Flechettes
- Radar Echo (Chaff)
- Propaganda
- Sub-Munitions
- Radio Jamming Transmitter
Where can fuses be positioned in a projectile or rocket munition?
-Nose
-Base
What are means of initiation for rocket and projectile fuses?
- Impact
- Time
- Proximity
What are some common projectile fuse identification features?
Point Detonating
-Single piece construction
-Crushable nose shield
-May have SQ/Delay selector
Base Detonating
-Screwed into base of round
-Most are flush
-Nomenclature stamped on base
-Tracer elements
Mechanical Time
-Multi-piece construction
-May have time calibration scale
-Setting lugs/slots
What are some of the identifying features of a mechanical time projectile fuse?
Multi-piece construction
May have a time calibration scale
Setting lugs or slots
SQ/Delay setting if an impact element is integral (MTSQ)
