What are phobias?
Irrational fear of something affecting your day to day life
What are 4 behavioural factors that identify as mental illness
- Statistical deviation (Very high or low IQ)
- Deviation from social norms
- Failure to function adequately
- Deviation from ideal mental health
What type of fear do phobias lead to?
Maladaptive fear
What is maladaptive fear?
extreme signs of fear due to the incapability to adapt and adjust to a situation or environment

- Cognitive
- Behavioural

What causes the development of phobias

How to treat phobias?
- Systematic Desensitisation (Slow way)
- Flooding (Quick way)
Benefits of Systematic desensitisation
- Teaching patient to physically relax
- Understanding what the patient is most and least scared of
- Slow exposure to phobia
Cons of systematic Desensitisation?
Slow
Benefits of Flooding?
- Immediate exposure to phobia
- Patient quickly treated if successful
Cons of Flooding?
- Results in extreme panic and nervousness from patient until tired
- Can result in harming patient
What is Genetic predisposition?
A greater likelihood for someone to develop an illness due to genetics
