What is conformity?
Conformity is adjusting our behaviour or thinking to coincide with a group standard
What are the 3 types of conformity
- (Compliance) Superficial agreement
- (Identification) behaviour and private beliefs only change when in the group as membership is valued
- (Internalisation) Genuine change in personal beliefs to match the group permanent
Explanations for Conformity
- Normative Social influence which is the desire to be liked and avoid rejection
- Informational Social Influence which is driven by the desire to be right (we look to others when uncertain, more likely to be permanent)
Asch Line experiment ( Procedure, Findings and Variations
Procedure: Participant judged line lengths while confederates all gave wrong answer
Findings: 32% conformity rate overall, 75% conformed at least once.
Variations: Group size, Unanimity and Task difficulty

When members of a group have the same belief over time
What is Informative Social Influence explanation for conformity?
Going along with the majority due to seeing them as right this occurs because of a desire to be right. It leads to internalisation permanent change in view/behaviour
Pros of Normative Social Influence as a reason for conformity
After Asch’s experiment people were interviewed and revealed that they had conformed due to not wanting to feel rejection from others
