Quarantine/TB Flashcards
(17 cards)
Newly imported primates must be quarantined for a minimum for how many days and where?
minimum of 31 days at a CDC registered primate import facility
Once animals have completed the mandatory quarantine at the import facility, how long should they be quarantined at the receiving facility?
30 days or longer
On arrival, primates should be allowed how long for acclimation?
72 hours
What type of tuberculin is used for the tuberculin skin test?
Mammalian Old Tuberculin
How often is the tuberculin skin test performed in quarantine
Every 2 weeks in alternating eyelids for the duration of the quarantine period
How often in the tuberculin skin test evaluated and how is it evaluated
evaluated at 24, 48, and 72 hours and graded on a scale of 0-5 for reaction grade based on the observed changes
What type of hypersensitivity is the TST testing for?
delayed type hypersensitivity
What is a grade 0 reaction?
Negative; no reaction observed
What is a grade 1 reaction?
Negative; bruise; extravasation of blood in eyelid from injection
What is a grade 2 reaction?
Negative; varying degrees of erythema of palpebrum without swelling
What is a grade 3 reaction?
Indeterminant; varying degrees of erythema of palpebrum with minimum swelling or slight swelling without erythema
What is a grade 4 reaction?
Positive; obvious swelling of palpebrum with drooping of eyelid with varying degrees of erythema
What is a grade 5 reaction?
Positive; swelling and/or necrosis with eyelid closed
What happens if only one animal in a group is positive?
all animals in the group are considered exposed and the testing and quarantine procedures are extended.
What are three reasons for a false negative reaction to the TST?
1) early or advanced disease
2) Isoniazid therapy (used to tx TB)
3) Concomitant dz such as measles or measles vaccine due to immunosuppression
What are three reasons for a false positive reaction to the TST?
1) exposure to Freund’s complete adjuvant
2) trauma due to improper administration of the test
3) infection with atypical mycobacterium such as M. avium or M. kansasii
4) nonspecific reaction to the vehicle
What is the sensitivity and specificity of the intradermal skin test?
sensitivity- 84%
specificity-87%
