Quarter 1 Week 3 [School-based] Flashcards
(15 cards)
Etymology of Prokaryotes
came from the greek words “pro” meaning “before
and “karyon” meaning “nut or kernel” but in science, it’s “nucleus”
it was called BEFORE NUCLEUS because it doesn’t have a TRUE NUCLEUS…..meaning, its nucleus or genetic material isn’t bounded by a membrane.
It has no visible boundary
What are the two prokaryote domains
bacteria and archaea
these prokaryotes live in normal environmental conditions/settings (not too harsh)
Bacteria
these are prokaryotes that can live even in harsh environmental conditions (e.g seaweed living underwater with high salinity)
archaea
What is the average size of a prokaryotic cell?
1-5 micrometer in size or 1-5x10^-6 meters
smallest prokaryotic cell
mycoplasma
largest prokaryotic cell
Thiomargarita nemibiensis
Proper writing of scientific names
- italicize it (if typed)
- capitalize genus
- do not capitalize species
- underline (if written)
Etymology of Eukaryotes
from the greek word “Eu” meaning “true
and “karyon” meaning “nucleus”
It has a TRUE NUCLEUS because its nucleus is membrane-bounded, thus, it has a visible boundary
average size of a eukaryotic cell
30 micrometer in size or 3.0x10^-5 meter
largest eukaryotic cell in humans
egg cell
smallest eukaryotic cell in humans
sperm cell
egg cell + sperm cell
nodular
smallest eukaryotic cell
Prasinophyte algae (can be mobile because of the presence of flagellum)
largest eukaryotic cell
Caulerpa taxifolia
