Quiz 7 Flashcards
(21 cards)
Describe the structure and function of the external ear
- Contains the pinna, ear canal and tympanic membrane
- Collects sound waves and channels them into the ear canal where the sound gets amplified
Describe the structure and function of the middle ear
- Contains the malleus, incus and stapes
- Collects the sound waves from external environment and transfers them into inner ear for auditory transduction
Describe the structure and function of the inner ear
- Contains the cochlea, semi-circular canals and vestibules
- Transfers auditory vibrations into electrical impulses to travel along the eighth cranial nerve to the brain
Describe the physiology of static balance
When the head is in proper position the cupola stays upright
Describe the physiology of dynamic balance
As the head moves the cupola bends in the opposite direction of the rotation
What are the organs and accessory organs of the integumentary system
The skin
For the two layers of the dermis what are their proper name and the tissue type it is composed of
- Papillary layer is made of loose connective tissue
- Reticular layer is made of dense irregular connective tissue
What are the five layers of the skin and their function
- Stratum corneum: prevents unwanted materials from entering
- Stratum lucidum: reduce friction between two layers
- Stratum granulosum: prevents fluid loss
- Stratum spinosum: makes skin flexible and strong
- Stratum basale: replenishes the cells
What are the two main chemicals in the epidermis and how they provide protection
- Keratinocytes produces keratin which keeps the skin waterproof
- Menanocytes produces melanin which produces skin color and uv protection
What are the main function of eyelashes
Protection of the eye balls from unwanted particles
What are the main functions of the nostril hairs
Protection of the nasal canal from unwanted particles
What are the main functions of body hair
Protection, sensory input from hair follicles and communication
What are the main function of nails and how does their structure help
Provides support as fingers and toes are the farthest extremities and experiences max mechanical stress, composed of tightly packed keratin
What is the location and function of the eccrine sudoiferous gland
Squiggly guy that hangs around
- Sweat gland that regulates body temp throughout body
What is the location and function of the apocrine sudoriferous gland
What is the location and function of the sebaceous gland
Attached to hair roots
- oil gland that lubricates and waterproofs the skin
How does the skin provide protection
- Mechanical protection through keratin
- Prevents dehydration through lipid secretions
- UV light protection through melanin
How does the skin regulate body temperature
Sweat glands produce sweat (dissolved electrolytes, lactic acid, urea) to reduce heat
How does the skin provide sensation
- Mechanoreceptors (touch)
- Thermoreceptors (temp)
- Nocioreceptors (pain)
How does the skin synthesize vitamin D
Converts the run rays to a form of vitamin D, needed to absorb calcium
How does the skin excrete
Mainly by sweating to remove waste products (salt, CO2, ammonia)
