Red man syndrome Flashcards
(9 cards)
What is Red Man Syndrome (RMS)?
A hypersensitivity reaction primarily associated with vancomycin infusion causing flushing, rash, itching, and sometimes hypotension.
Which antibiotic is most commonly associated with Red Man Syndrome?
Vancomycin.
Name three other drugs besides vancomycin that can cause Red Man Syndrome or similar reactions.
Ciprofloxacin, cefepime, rifampin (also teicoplanin and amphotericin B).
What is the underlying mechanism of Red Man Syndrome?
Histamine release from mast cells and basophils triggered by certain drugs.
What symptoms characterize Red Man Syndrome?
Flushing, rash, itching, and possibly hypotension.
How can the risk of Red Man Syndrome be minimized during vancomycin administration?
By slowing down the infusion rate.
Which medication is commonly used to treat symptoms of Red Man Syndrome?
Antihistamines.
True or False: Red Man Syndrome is a true allergic (IgE-mediated) reaction.
False — it is a non-IgE-mediated hypersensitivity caused by direct histamine release.
Besides antibiotics, what other types of drugs can sometimes trigger Red Man Syndrome?
Opioids, contrast dyes, muscle relaxants, and some other medications.
