Respiration Tips Flashcards

1
Q

Why does oxygen concentration decrease in a cell?

A

oxygen is being taken up as the final electron acceptor in the ETC during oxidative phosphorylation

Q

What causes the electron transport chain to start?

A

reduced coenzymes NAD and FAD releasing hydrogen (which splits into proton and electron) into the mitochondrial matrix

Q

What does cyanide do to respiration?

A
  • inhibits cytochromes which are carrier proteins involved in the ETC
  • this inhibits the ETC and thus oxidative phosphorylation
  • oxygen concentration will stay the same because no more O2 being taken up as a final electron acceptor

Q

Why might the RQ value not be 1 even if glucose is being respired?

A

anaerobic and aerobic respiration is occurring so more carbon dioxide is produced than oxygen taken up (because only aerobic takes up oxygen)
