Respiratory & Cardiovascular System Flashcards
(40 cards)
What is the main function of the respiratory system?
To supply oxygen to the body and remove carbon dioxide through gas exchange.
What is external respiration?
Gas exchange between the lungs and blood.
What is internal respiration?
Gas exchange between the blood and body cells.
What is the function of the nasal cavity?
Filters, warms, and moistens air before it enters the lungs.
What is cellular respiration?
The use of oxygen by cells to produce energy (ATP) from glucose.
What are sinuses and what do they do?
Air-filled spaces that reduce skull weight and help warm/humidify air.
What is the pharynx?
The throat; passageway for air and food.
What is the larynx?
The voice box; houses the vocal cords.
What is the trachea?
The windpipe; a tube that carries air to the bronchi.
What are bronchi?
Two main air passages that branch from the trachea into each lung.
What are bronchioles?
Smaller branches of the bronchi that lead to the alveoli.
What are alveoli?
Tiny air sacs where gas exchange occurs with capillaries.
What is surfactant and why is it important?
A substance that reduces surface tension in alveoli, preventing collapse.
What is inspiration (inhalation)?
The process of taking air into the lungs; diaphragm contracts downward.
What is expiration (exhalation)?
The process of pushing air out of the lungs; diaphragm relaxes.
What part of the brain regulates breathing?
The medulla oblongata and pons.
What is the role of chemoreceptors in breathing?
They detect changes in CO₂ and O₂ levels and adjust breathing rate
How does oxygen move from lungs to blood?
Through diffusion across the alveolar-capillary membrane.
How is carbon dioxide removed from the blood?
Diffuses from blood to alveoli and is exhaled.
What is the cardiovascular system responsible for?
Transporting oxygen, nutrients, hormones, and waste through blood.
What are the three layers of the heart wall?
Epicardium, myocardium, endocardium.
What are the four heart valves and their functions?
Tricuspid, pulmonary, mitral (bicuspid), aortic – ensure one-way blood flow.
What is the septum of the heart?
A wall dividing the right and left sides of the heart.
What are the two circuits of blood flow?
Pulmonary (heart to lungs) and systemic (heart to body).
