Q

What is the function of the breath during Yogasana?

A

Slow steady breathing, slows down the rate by which the breath departs the lungs; this provides the lungs more time to extract oxygen from the inhalation before it leaves the body

Q

What is the function of respiration?

A

To keep the oxygen concentration high and the carbon dioxide concentration low in the alveoli so this gas exchange can occur

Q

What is the biochemistry of respiration?

A

In the pulmonary capillary, haemoglobin in the red blood cells is bound by carbon dioxide molecules, oxygen then binds to haemoglobin and the carbon dioxide is released.
The carbon dioxide passes across the alveolar membrane into the air sac. The carbon dioxide is then expelled when you exhale and the oxygen-enriched blood returns to the heart.
