respiratory system Flashcards
(34 cards)
what does the respiratory system do
provides oxygen for the body, and allows carbon dioxide to leave it
what is the equation for cellular respiration
glucose + oxygen —> carbon dioxide + water + energy
what are the main organs of the respiratory system
mouth/nose, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, bronchioles, lungs, alveoli, diagphragm
what is the respiratory system lined with
epithelial cells that produce mucus
what do the epithelial cells contain
cilia
what is cilia
hair-like projections that move mucus and filter out particles
what does the nose/nasal cavity do
filters, moistens, and regulates the air
what is the pharynx
it’s the throat, shared between the respiratory and digestive system.
what does the pharynx do for the respiratory system
conducts air toward the lungs
what is the larynx
it’s also called the voice box because it contains vocal chords, it’s associated with the epiglottis
what is the trachea also known as
windpipe
what is the trachea supported by and what does this allow
rings of cartilage, allows air to flow freely and keeps it open
what does the trachea split into
2 tubes called bronchi, each leads into each lung.
what is an individual bronchi called
a bronchus (right and left)
what are alveoli
the air sacs in the lungs where gas exchange occurs
what surrounds alveoli
capillaries
what does oxygen do from the lungs
diffuses INTO bloodstream
what does carbon dioxide do from the bloodstrem
diffuses into the lungs
what is gas exchange
the process of taking in oxygen and releasing carbon dioxide
where does gas exchange take place
in the alveoli and at body cells
why are the walls of alveoli and capillaries thin
for efficient gas exchange
how many total lungs, how many lobes on each side
2 total, the right has 3 lobes, left has 2 (to make room for heart)
what is breathing
the process of moving air into and out of the lungs
breathing into lungs
inhalation
