types of cells Flashcards
(14 cards)
a cell is
the smallest living thing that is capable of performing life functios
prokaryotic cell
doesnt contain a nucleus or other membrane bound organelles. bacteria and archea, single celled.
eukaryotic cell
contains a nucleus and other organelles, each surrounded by a thin membrane. unicellular or multicellular, animals, plants, fungi, protists
organelle
Organelles are small structures inside cells that perform specific functions.
cellular respiration
Cellular respiration is how cells break down food to make energy (ATP).
sexual reproduction
fusion of 2 gametes (sperm and egg) offspring gets characteristics from both parents
asexual reproduction
offspring is genetically identical to the one parent
diffusion
chemical movement from areas of high to low concentration
osmosis
water movement from areas of high to low concentration
chromosome
coiled up chromatin, Structures made of DNA that carry genetic information.
chromatid
one of the identical halves of a duplicated chromosome
centromere
holds sister chromatids together in a chromosome
what does a plant cell have that an animal cell doesnt
cell wall- outside cell membrane, made of cellulose, for support and protection
central vacuole- takes up most space, keep cells plump
chloroplasts- contain chlorophyll, a pigment, and absorb light energy from sun for photosynthesis
chromatin
loose messy DNA in nucleus during interphase
