Respiratory System Flashcards
(40 cards)
What is the main function of the respiratory system?
To move air in and out of the lungs and exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide.
What is ventilation?
The process of moving air into and out of the lungs.
What is external respiration?
The exchange of gases between the lungs and the blood.
What is internal respiration?
The exchange of gases between the blood and body cells.
What do cilia in the respiratory tract do?
Trap dust and other particles and move them out of the airways.
What are the parts of the pharynx?
Nasopharynx, oropharynx, and laryngopharynx.
What is the function of the epiglottis?
To prevent food from entering the trachea during swallowing.
What are alveoli?
Tiny air sacs in the lungs where gas exchange occurs.
What is the trachea?
A tube that connects the larynx to the bronchi and allows air passage to the lungs.
What is the pleura?
A double-layered membrane that surrounds the lungs and reduces friction during breathing.
What happens during inhalation?
The diaphragm contracts and moves downward, expanding the lungs.
What is the normal respiratory rate for adults?
12 to 20 breaths per minute.
What is asthma?
A condition where airways become inflamed and narrow, causing breathing difficulty.
What is bronchitis?
Inflammation of the bronchial tubes, often causing cough and mucus.
What is pneumonia?
An infection that inflames the air sacs in one or both lungs.
What is COPD?
A group of diseases that cause airflow blockage and breathing problems.
What is emphysema?
A condition where the alveoli are damaged, making it hard to breathe.
What is a pneumothorax?
A collapsed lung due to air leaking into the space between the lung and chest wall.
What is the difference between the right and left lungs?
The right lung has 3 lobes; the left lung has 2 lobes to make space for the heart.
What oxygen saturation level should be reported?
Anything below 94% should be reported.
