Resporatory System Flashcards
(27 cards)
Why does air move on and out of the lungs?
So we can gain oxygen and get rid of carbon dioxide
What is gas exchange?
Gas exchange is the movement of oxygen from the alveoli into the blood and the movement of carbon dioxide from the blood into the alveoli.
What is diffusion?
Diffusion is the movement of molecules from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration
What are the three blood vessels?
Arteries, capillaries and veins are the three blood vessels
What are arteries?
Arteries carry blood away from the heart
What do arteries split up into and what do these do?
Arteries split up into millions of tiny capillaries which supply blood to all of the individual body cells
What do capillaries join back up into and what do these do?
Capillaries join back up into veins which take the blood back to the heart
In which of the three blood vessels {Arteries, Capillaries, Veins} does blood travel the fastest?
Blood travels the fastest on the arteries
What does the right side of the heart do?
The right side of the heart pumps blood to the lungs
After blood leaves the left atrium where does blood go to?
After blood leaves the left atrium blood goes to the left ventricle
What three things does the cardiovascular system consist of?
The cardiovascular system consists of heart, blood and blood vessels {capillaries}
Where does oxygenation take place?
Oxygenation takes place in the lungs
What is the main job of red blood cells?
The main job of red blood cells is carrying oxygen around the body
What is aerobic respiration?
Aerobic Respiration is the chemical reaction that makes the body release energy from glucose (sugar in food) using oxygen
What are carbon dioxide and water in our bodies?
Waste products
What is the chemical equation for respiration?
Glucose + oxygen –> (energy) + carbon dioxide + water
What are the four chambers of the heart?
Left ventricle, right ventricle, left atrium, right atrium
Where does blood become oxygenated?
Blood becomes oxygenated in the lungs
How does breathing in and out work?
When the diaphragm contracts, the ribs expand, creating more space as the ribs expand. Air pressure in the lungs becomes lower than their pressure outside, driving air into the lungs as a result.
Where is oxygen processed in the body and then where does it go after that?
Oxygen goes to the lungs, where the blood is then oxygenated
Where is glucose processed in the body and then where does it go after that?
Glucose is processed in the small intestine, and is taken out of blood
Where is carbon dioxide processed in the body?
Carbon dioxide is processed in the lungs, where it is extracted and then exhaled out of the body
Where is water processed in the body?
Water is processed in the lungs as water vapour and is also excreted
What is respiration?
Respiration is a chemical reaction that happens in every cell in your body
