Sound Flashcards
(16 cards)
Can the vibrations of sound be seen?
Sometimes the vibrations are obvious {eg. Rubber band}, but sometimes they are impossible to see.
How does sound travel?
The vibrating object makes particles in the air around it vibrate, the particles pass on the vibrations to the particles next to them and the particles pass on the vibrations in waves
What is the part of the sound wave where the particles are densely packed called?
The compression
What is the part of the sound wave where the particles are more loosely packed called?
The rarefraction
What does sound travel in?
Sound travels in waves
How does an object make sound?
To make any sound an object has to vibrate
{sound graph}
What is the top of the sound wave called?
The crest
{sound graph}
What is the length of the upper one sound wave called?
The amplitude
{sound graph}
What is the bottom of the lower one sound wave called?
The trough
{sound graph}
What is one wavelength?
One wavelength is one upper wave and one lower wave
Why is there no sound on space?
There is no sound in space because sound is made when particles vibrate, and in space there is nothing so there is no sound
Is there any sound in a vacuum?
No, because there are no particles in a vacuum
What state of matter can sound travel fastest through and why?
Sound travels fastest through solids because the particles are closely together and more tightly packed so the vibrations can spread across particles quickly
What is pitch / frequency measured in?
Hertz (hz)
What is the volume measured in?
Decimals
What type of energy is sound released from a speaker as?
Kinetic energy
