Robotics Flashcards
(8 cards)
What is robotics?
Robotics is the combination of a range of disciplines to support the design, production, application and operation of robots.
What is a robot?
A machine that imitates a human with software working together to perform a range of tasks.
What is an industrial robot?
An automatically controlled and reprogrammable robot
What are the characteristics of robots?
Sensing- Light, touch, pressure, sonar and chemical sensors all give a robot awareness of its environment. A robot must be able to sense its surroundings.
Movement- Whether it’s rolling on wheels or walking on legs, a robot must be able to move.
Energy- A robot must be able to power itself, solarlly/electronically/battery powered
Intelligence- A robot must be programmed to know what to do
What are the components of an industrial robot?
Controller- It is referred to as the ‘brain’ and coordinates the operation of all other parts. It connects to external systems.
Arm- Varys in shape and size based on the specific task. It can move and rotate, and each joint gives it a degree of freedom.
End effector- Is the hardware that connects the robots arm and performs a specific function. Can be grippers, magnets or a vacuum.
Sensors- Provide feedback to the controller about the environment and will collect data.
Robotics in commercial situations
Welding- high quality and high speed
Spray painting- reduced cost and will not be in danger of hazardous fumes
Product packaging- ability to transport large quantities with standardised quality
Healthcare- high levels of precision and do not need to have breaks
Humans v robots advantages of robots
Faster and more accurate to increase efficiency
Adhere to certain standards of quality
Can perform tasks that are dangerous to humans
Can work with repetitive tasks and work 24hrs
Humans vs robots disadvantages of robots
Hardware could fail
Deskilling of staff
Loss of traditional jobs
High initial costs
