what is an expert
an expert refers to academics in the field of study
why are experts reliable sources of information
an academic will have spent years studying the subject and will have written and published papers which have been peer assessed by other academics in the field. they will have conducted specialist research and their research methodologies will have been checked over by other experts.
why may experts not be the most reliable source of information
academics sometimes speak on issues which are outside of their area of expertise, just because they have a PhD in one subject does not make them an expert in all things. and experts are not immune from bias and from expressing personal opinions. therefore they should not be accepted uncritically.
