Q

why should capitalism be considered when using newspapers/news websites as a source of information

A
  • all newspapers in the UK are run for profit.
  • this means that they are trying to sell copies and sell advertising. journalists are aware and this has an impact on the way they write stories and the way editors choose to print stories and the priority they give them.
  • this means that some issues may be given exaggerated importance by placement in a newspaper to make it seem like a bigger problem than it is - like terrorism or violent crime. while other issues which might damage the capitalist agenda, like climate change, are rarely reported on at all
