Sampling and biodiversity master deck Flashcards
for chapter 11 (8 cards)
What is biodiversity?
Variety of living organisms in an area
What is a specie?
A group of similar organisms able to reproduce to give fertile offspring
What is a Habitat?
An area inhabited by a species….
What are the types of biodiversity?
Habitat Biodiversity
Genetic Biodiversity
Species Biodiversity
What is specie biodiversity?
Is the number of different species and the abundance of each specie in an area.
What is Genetic Biodiversity?
The variation of an alleles within a specie (or a population of a species)
What factors affect global biodiversity?
Human population growth
Increased use of mono-culture in agriculture
Climate change
How does human population growth affect the level of global biodiversity?
Human development can result in the destruction of habitats to make way for grazing and agriculture. this decreasing habitat diversity
The greater demand of resources means that a lot of resources is used before being replenished. This decreases genetic diversity within the population, as well as decreasing species biodiversity
Sprawling cities and major road construction can isolate species, meaning they are unable to interbreed and genetic diversity within populations. Decreasing species diversity
