SB.2 Forces & Stresses Flashcards
Compression
When pushing force is applied to either end of mat
Bending
Both tension & compression forces; tension on one side w compression on other
Torsion
Forces occur when a mat is twisted
Tension
When a pulling force is applied to either end of mat
Shear
Force acts on an object in a direction perpendicular to its length
See images for diagrams
Enhancing mats
Mats can be enhanced to work w a variety of forces & stresses, improving functionality
What does enhancing mats include
Reinforced - strengthened by addition of other mats
Strengthened - made stronger or more rigid to resist certain forces
Made more flexible
Enhancing mats: bending
Adding curves, arches, can add strength to products, using minimum amount of mat
Enhancing mats: folding
Adds strength, but also felxibility by allowing to bend easily
Enhancing mats: lamination
Bonding 2 or more mats tt. Products strength & stability improved. Also for aesthetic finishes
Enhancing mats: webbing
Strong fabrics, often woven into flat strips. Used for items under high tension
(Seatbelt)
Enhancing mats: fabric interfacing
Adds additional layer to give structure, shape & support
