SC.5 Design Strategies Flashcards
Collaboration
Working w others to create smth. Bringing ppl tg to pool ideas & concepts.
User centred design
Designers need to focus on the user & their needs, requirements, feedback. Involves research & investigation into user
Systems approach
Considers all the steps in a project. Processes as a whole are analysed often using flowcharts, block diagrams
Iterative design
Used by designers to continually improve a design/product. Continual cycle of prototyping, testing, feedback & making improvements until a final product is ready to release
Adv: ensurs product is fit for purpose. Prevents manufacturing w errors
Avoiding design fixation
Design fixation stops designer considering multiple strategies to solve a design problem or develop new ideas. Must use range of ideas to challenge own thinking
Sketching
Important step to get concept onto paper. Early ideas can be rough, final sketch should be detailed w annotations
Modelling
Low-cost method of seeing how product looks & works. Check proportions & dimensional accuracy.
Testing
Destructive testing: tests product to its extreme. Mat choices, construction methods
Non-destructive testing: identifies areas of weakness. Testing w/o destroying
Market testing: how product performs w use groups & client testing, feeback
Evaluation
Informs designer abt which part of product work & which need improving
