What are scabies caused by?
Tiny mites called Sarcoptes scabiei
Scabies is a skin condition caused by these mites that burrow under the skin.
What symptoms are associated with scabies?
Intense itching and small red spots
Symptoms may include track marks where mites have burrowed.
Where is the classic location for scabies lesions?
Between finger webs
Lesions can spread to the entire body.
What is the management treatment for scabies?
Permethrin cream and oral ivermectin
Permethrin cream is applied to the whole body, while ivermectin is a single dose treatment.
How is permethrin cream applied for scabies treatment?
Applied to the whole body and left on for 8-12 hours
Afterward, it should be washed off and repeated after 1 week.
What is the treatment protocol for oral ivermectin in scabies?
Single dose repeated a week later
This is particularly for difficult to treat or crusted scabies.
Who should be treated for scabies?
All household/close contacts, even if asymptomatic
This is to prevent reinfestation and spread.

Patches of red skin can be misdiagnosed as psoriasis.
What may be required for the treatment of crusted scabies?
Admission for oral ivermectin treatment and isolation
