what is the news influences dependent on (3 INFLUENCES)
1- news values
2- organisational constraints
3- ownership of media
what are news values
are values which determine what is newsworthy (interesting enough to catch the audience):
-extraordinariness: events that are rare
-threshold: the bigger scale of the event
-references to the elite parsons: famous and powerful people
what are organisational constraints
factors that can affect the work: cost, space, time, deadlines, journalist ethics or audience
what is the ownership of media
theoretical news of the story selection links to ownership and control
what is the presentation of media and which sociologist said this
Chandler said that TV is the window of the world. News tv uses a range of techniques to make it seem more trustworthy such as:
-News readers remain neutral and don’t express their opinions
-News readers make eye contact with the reader
-Body language denotes authority on a topic
-Newsreaders are always friendly and reassuring even if the news isn’t pleasant
meaning that the news production such as BBC is presented to us as a trusted source
Marxists view on selection and presentation
-Moral panics
-spin doctors
-Ownerships are gatekeepers
what are moral panics (marxist arguement)
people who’s job it is to portray or spin events in a particular way (e.g. Dominic cummings or Alistair Campbell of notable examples of spin doctors who have worked for the gov). Spin doctors present the news purposefully in way with the goal of swaying public opinions on particular issues
what are spin doctors (marxist arguement)
links to media being an ISA. media owners create moral panics on particular groups to create false class consciousness
and divert from problems in society created by ruling class
what are owners are gatekeepers and which sociologist said this
directly decide on what is selected in the news
McChesney argued that the truth telling is primary function of journalists and that news gathering is mainly based on a set of objectives news values is an ideological myth
however Schlesinger is critical of this by saying media do not always act like this in interests of the most powerful. Politicians are very careful on what they say to the news media as they’re aware that news can shape public perceptions of their policies and practices.
