what are the 4 main stereotypes of the w-c and the underclass and which sociologists said this
1- dumb and stupid was said by Bustch to where in a study in the US tv programmes there were persistent images of the w-c as buffoons or figure of fun. Also seen as immature and irresponsible
2- troublesome and a source of conflict: often presented as welfare scroungers who cannot cope with their uncontrollable children (e.g. shameless)
3-living in a idealised, romanticised w-c communities: tend to be portrayed as hard working to overcome their struggles as the w-c (e.g. shameless)
4-white trash or charvas: w-c are demonised and stereotyped as having poor taste within culture ( Jeremy kyle show)

how is the middle class represented
-depicted as concerned on manners, decency and social responsibility
-catered in within the media as they focus on issues which interest the middle classes and initiate moral panics on issues such as immigration
-living in nuclear families to where they work hard as do their children
how is the upper-class represented
rarely criticised within the media for their wealth and responsibilities and media rarely focus on the inequities of capitalism
1- media view Uk as a meritocracy and media portrayals of the wealthy are presentative of the idea that talented people are deserving of high rewards
2-such stories motivate people to work hard in the belief that they can attain these rewards which benefits the economy
3-focus on finance, stocks and shares may merely reflect the importance of these sectors for the economyh

Nairn- notes that the monarchy is rarely criticised of the institution or the individuals in it however there is obsession of the monarchy by the media coverage. it also produces a national identity
