What are the patient factors relating to the person?
Age Gender Physiological state Pathological state Social factors
What are the patient factors relating to the Time?
Calender time - Seasons
Relative time - Where they have recently been
What are the patient factors relating to Place?
Current place
Recent place
Can have Micro-geographies
What are the mechanisms of infection?
Contiguous spread Inoculation Haematogenous Ingestion Inhalation Vector Vertical transmission
What is Haematogenous?
Blood bourne transmission eg HIV
What is vertical transmission?
Between mother and foetus eg Rubella
What are the 2 types of treatment?

Dead space removal
What is correlated to increased chance of death?
The longer it takes to treat
When is supportive treatment used immediately?
Cases where the symptoms are life threatening eg septic shock
