What is the purpose of whistleblowing
Patient safety and care quality, protection of vulnerable individuals, ethical and legal compliance
Define whistleblowing
The act of raising concerns about wrong doing, misconduct or unsafe practices within the healthcare settings
What are 7 ways to relate person centred care and safeguarding
-respecting dignity and autonomy
-protection from harm
-empowering the individual
-risk management with patients needs in mind
-confidentiality and privacy
-preventing abuse and neglect in care settings
-inclusive decision making
What is the first step you should take if you have safeguarding concerns
Follow company policies and procedures
What is the second step you should take if you have safeguarding concerns
Report- priority is individuals safety- do not intervene unless there is immediate threat or danger to individual
What is the third step you should take if you have safeguarding concerns
Communicate with the individual- respect their confidentiality balancing it with the risk. Do not ask leading questions (don’t put words in their mouth, open ended questions only)
What is the fourth step you should take if you have safeguarding concerns
Record- document allegation immediately to avoid missed or wrong information, fact date and sign the document is NECESSARY
What is the fifth step you should take if you have safeguarding concerns
Preserve evidence- take pictures of visible injuries with consent, don’t wash them or change clothes
