Shame and Guilt
Moral Emotions
They both try to inhibit antisocial and morally objectionable behaviors
Not equally moral
Guilt is more Adaptive.
Early work suggested shame is more of a public emotion and guilt is more of a private emotion - research failed to support this notion.
There doesnt seem to be any “classic” shame or guilt inducing situations
Differentiating
Depends heavily on the attribution one makes:
Do they blame the self vs Do they blame the behavior
I = shame
Did = guilt
Shame: accompanied with a sense of being small, worthless, powerless, and comes with a sharp drop in state self esteem.
Guilt: feel tensions and remorse about the bad things we have done, more adaptive because it leads to reparation behaviors.
