Cognitive Schemas and Self Control Flashcards
(8 cards)
2 types of Schemas
Entity Schema : an ability that is resistant to change. Finite amount. Static, more or less.
Incremental Schema : an ability that we can improve upon through experience. Believe we can grow.
Entity Schema
People want to prove they can perform the task. They could get upset and less likely to try again.
Fixed Mindset.
See effort and excessive practice as a bad thing. Talent should be natural.
Negative feedback is met with significantly more resistance.
Intimidated by other successes.
Incremental Schema
People see a task as a way to extend your abilities. Want to learn from your experiences so that you can improve.
Believe in practice.
Opposite of all the entity.
Dual Process Models
Models use two different modes of cognition : Effortful and Automatic
Cognitive Experiential Self Theory
We experience reality through 2 systems : Rational and Experiential.
Self control=Rational
Quick and Dirty=Experiential
Experiential mode can take over when an event is emotionally charged.
Easier to be rational when it is someone else’s problem. Intellectualization.
Self Control
The overriding, inhibiting, or stopping of urges, emotions and moods, thoughts, or behaviors in order to reach some goal.
Effortful
SUBSET of Self Regulation
Limited Strength Model
-after exerting self control, subsequent efforts at self control suffers.
- only tasks that recquire self control will be hindered MEANING if something uses the automatic system, it will not be affected.
Metaphor : skeletal muscle
Research
Deplete some participants of self control vs others who are not depleted.
Dont eat for 2-3 hours. They smell chocolate chip cookies.
Some got to eat, Some ate radishes, Some no food (IV)
Then they work on an unsolvable task. Measuring persistance. (DV)
Cookie: 20 min
Radish: 8 min
No food:
INTERPERSONALLY:
Present self naturally vs act likeable and competent (IV)
Were told that that was an audience of clinical psych students who were accepting vs skeptical (IV)
All recorded video, facial expressions exhibited (DV)
Prevent your facial expressions.
Participants who were depleted had a harder time stifling emotions as they exerted energy against the skeptical audience and having to act it out.
Muraven Study
IV - no emotion vs increased emotion vs inhibit emotion
DV - amount of strength exerted on a hand grip.
Participants no emotion squeezed longer but the Increased emotion was shorter
