Skeleton Flashcards
What is included in the Axial Skeleton?
The spine, skull and pelvis
What does the Appendicular skeleton consist of?
The limbs that attach to the axial skeleton
What does the Splanchnic skeleton consist of?
Bone not attached to the appendicular or axial skeleton such as the os penis in a dog or cat
Condyle
A rounded projection on a bone, usually for articulation with another bone
Crest
A raised area of bone
Foramen
An opening or passage into or through a bone
Fossa
A hollow or depressed area on a bone
Groove
A depression in a bone
Medullary cavity
The centre of long bones, often where bone marrow is found
Periosteum
The outer covering if bones
Process
A thin, elongated projection
Sinus
A narrow, hollow cavity
Tuberosity/trochanter/tubercle
protuberances on a bone, which are usually for the attachment of muscles
Trochlea
bony structures through or over which tendons pass; usually grooves in the bone and allow tendons to act as pulleys
epicondyle
a projection of bone on the lateral edge above its condyle
tendon
connects muscle to bone
ligament
connects one bone to another bone
sesamoid bones
sesame-seed-shaped bones that develop within a tendon that runs over an underlying body prominence, they serve to change the angle at which the tendon passes over the bone and reduce wear and tear
pneumatic bones
bones that contain air filled sinuses that reduce the weight of the bone
splanchic bone
develops within an organ, unattached from the rest of the skeleton
Osteoblasts
cells that lay down new bone
Osteoclasts
Cells that destroy or remodel bone
On which bone is the greater and lesser tubercle found?
the humerus
On which bone is the greater and lesser trochanter?
the femur
