smacking Flashcards
(6 cards)
What does corporal punishment involve?
smacking,hitting, and beating
The Gershoff (2002) meta-analysis indicates that corporal punishment is associated
with what outcomes for children? Are the outcomes generally desirable or
undesirable?
It is associated with the reported aggression, criminal, antisocial behaviour, and adult abuse of own child or spouse. The outcomes are generally undesirable
The Paolucci and Violato (2004) meta-analysis focussed on affective, cognitive and
behavioural outcomes. Which outcomes had the largest effects?
Behavioural
Is there any evidence that smacking, on its own, can produce undesirable outcomes
in children? If so, what are the outcomes? Does corporal punishment lead to
immediate compliance? Why doesn’t it work? How do children experience corporal
punishment and what does it teach them?
Taylor’s study found that mothers who smacked children is 2 time per months were 1.49 times likely to have a child with higher aggression at age 5 compared to mothers who smacked 2 times or less> the corporal punishment doesn’t lead to immediate compliance, because causes the kids to become more aggressive and anxious, no conversation. Children experienceanger from adults, hurtful, make them feel bad about themselves and feel angry towards others, does not show them what to do, and this teaches children to use violence.
Discuss why Māori are more likely to end up in care after child abuse in New
Zealand. Explain by discussing the link to poverty. Where relevant bring in data
indicating a link between poverty and child homicides in NZ, and the link between
poverty and corporal punishment in the United States.
NZ has exceptionally high levels of child poverty(where Maori children are overrepresented in poverty statistics and twice as likely to be abused or neglected. Child homicide increases as the social deprivation index score increase. In US ,Arcus study, significantly more scholl shooting death in US states that allowed corporal punishment compared with those that did not(effect size.44 -of medium magnitude)
Is corporal punishment only bad in countries where it is relatively uncommon? If not,
what are the negative outcomes for children in countries where it is common?
affective, cognitive and behavioral; still increase in child aggression and anxiety in countries where physical abuse common
