SOC 15 Flashcards
Cardio respitory system
The interaction of the heart and lungs to supply oxygen to muscles during exercise
Cardiovascular
To do with the heart, blood and blood vessels together
Vasodilation
When veins swell up or dilate widening of the internal diameter (lumen) of the blood vessel to allow increased blood flow
Vasoconstriction
When veins shrink down narrowing of the internal diameter (lumen) of the blood vessel to decrease blood flow
Vascular shunting
Process that increases blood flow to active areas during exercise by diverting blood away from inactive areas; vasodilation and vasoconstriction
What makes up the cardiovascualr system
Cardio means the heart
Vascular makes the vessels
Three main functions of the cardiovascular system?
-Transports oxygen, CO2 and nutrients
-It helps blood clot (through platelets which form scabs)
-controls the body temperature
Double circulatory system
Where the blood has to pass through the heart through 4 chambers into each circuit of the body
How does the heart pump blood?
-‘lub dub’ rhythm
What is the systolic phase? (Heart pump blood)
*blood is pumped from both atria into the ventricles then both ventricles contract
*this pushes the deoxygenated blood to leave the RV to the lungs
*oxygenated blood in the left ventricle leave via the aorta
What is the diastolic phase (heart pump blood)
*this is when the heart is relaxing and refilling with the atria with blood
Blood pressure
The measure of force that your heart uses to pump blood around the body
