What makes the cardiovascular system?
The cardiovascular system is formed by our heart and blood vessels. Cardio means the heart and vascular means blood vessels.
What are the 3 functions of the cardiovascular system?
Transports oxygen, carbon dioxide and nutrients
It helps clot blood
It controls the body’s temperature
How does transportation of oxygen, carbon dioxide and nutrients benefit the body?
The heart pumps oxygen around the body, which is used in respiration and the production of energy. It also carries away waste products and delivers nutrients and water.
How does helping the blood clot benefit the body?
Blood contains platelets which help clot our blood to form scabs which stop bleeding.
How does controlling the body’s temperature benefit the body?
If you get too hot the blood vessels close to the skin get bigger (vasodilation). If you get too cold your vessels will get smaller (vasoconstriction).
What is vascular shunting?
A process that increases blood flow to the working muscles by diverting blood away from the inactive areas such as the liver and intestines. This is achieved by vasodilation and vasoconstriction.
What hormone does your body release during exercise?
Your body releases adrenaline. This makes the heart beat faster and diverts blood away from the organs to the muscles.
What are the symptoms of overheating (hyperthermia)?
Sweating heavily
Raised body temperature
Reduces appetite
What are the symptoms of being too cold (hypothermia)?
Shivering
Pale, cold and dry skin
Tiredness or confusion
What is vasodilation?
When veins swell up or dilate; widening of the internal diameter (lumen) of the blood vessel to allow increased blood flow.
What is vasoconstriction?
When veins shrink down; narrowing of the internal diameter (lumen) of the blood vessel to decrease blood flow.
