What are Methods of Training used for?
A number of training methods can be used to improve fitness or performance.
What are the 6 main methods of training?
Continuous, Fartlek, Circuit, Interval, Plyometric, Weight
What do you need to take into consideration when choosing the right method of training?
The main factors are:
-The requirements of a particular sport
-The facilities in the local area
-The individuals current level of fitness
-The requirements of the sports
-The facilities available to you
We need to take this into consideration as there could be a risk of injury.
What is continuous training?
Working the entire body for long periods of time.
What component of fitness does continuous training measure?
Cardiovascular fitness
Advantages of continuous training?
- Improves cardiovascular fitness
-Not expensive
Disadvantages of continuous training?
- Doesn’t improve anaerobic fitness
- Some will find it boring
What is fartlek training?
A method of training where terrain and speed is constantly changing
What component of fitness does fartlek training measure?
Cardiovascular fitness
Advantages of fartlek training?
- Can be done on a variety of terrains
- Can include rest or be continuous
What are the disadvantages of fartlek training?
- There may not be suitable terrain nearby.
- Difficukt for coach to monitor
What is circuit training?
A series of exercises completed for a certain amount of time.
What component of fitness does circuit training measure?
Used for all components of fitness.
What are the advantages of circuit training?
- Can combine many components of fitness.
- A good source of all round fitness
What are the disadvantages of circuit training?
- The circuit needs to be set up and well planned.
- Doesnt push you to your limits
What is interval training?
Physical training involving alternating stages of high and low intensity activity.
What component of fitness does interval training measure?
Speed and cardiovascular fitness
Advantages of interval training?
- Includes repeated sprints, which is anaerobic
- Include rest period
Disadvantages of interval training?
- Can be intense so needs full commitment
- Some find repeating intervals boring
What is plyometric training?
Exercises where muscles use maximum force in short intervals
What component of fitness does plyometric training measure?
Power
Advantages of plyometric training?
- Exercises can be designed for a specific performance
- Improves explosive fitness
Disadvantages of plyometric training?
- Need knowledge of your event or a coach
- Need to progress gradually as rest and recovery is vital
What is weight training?
Involves shifting weight to increase the strength of the muscle using a programme of exercises.
