Carbohydrates function:
Stored in muscles and liver as glycogen, which is converted to glucose and used for energy
Fats function:
Provide energy and help muscles work
Proteins function:
Build muscle and repair body tissues
Vitamins function:
Helps body function properly
e.g. vision, skin, red blood cell formation
Minerals function:
Essential for a healthy body, e.g. bones and teeth, make bones strong, formation of red blood cells
Water function:
-Holds oxygen, transports nutrients, wast and hormones
-it controls temperature and helps you stay hydrated
Fibre function:
-reduce blood cholestoral levels, prevent constipation, get rid of waste
Complex carbohydrates:
-Found in natural foods
-help provide energy for exercise
-should form half of your daily intake
Simple carbohydrates:
-Sugars
-found in natural form in fruit and veg
-refined form in buscuits and cakes etc
What is carb-loading?
Strategy used by athletes to maximise the stores of glycogen in the liver and muscles
What are macro-nutrients?
Fats, carbs, proteins
