Soft Tissue Sarcoma Flashcards
(25 cards)
Arise from
Messnchymal cells and can occur anywhere in the body
Rhabdomyosarcoma accounts for
40% of cases in children
Embryonal RMS
Occurs in the head and neck or GU region in younger patients
Alveolar RMS
Less common occurs in legs chest abdomen and genital anal
Leveler variant carries
A worse prognosis and presents in teens
Alveolar character by
Translocations on chromosome 13
About 75% of soft tissue sarcoma occur
Before 10
The most common sites of disease
Head and neck ( 34)
Abdomen (24)
GU (23)
Extremities and trunk (17)
Presenting symptoms depend on
Area of involvement
Lstaging of RMS
Size, degree of surgery; nodal involvement, Mets
Let’s is likely to occur in
Bm or lung
Staging includes
Physical exam
Ultrasound
CT
mRI
Bone marrow biopsy and chest CT are done to detect
Mets
Mets is extremely rare in
Orbital presentation
Mets may be present about
25% of patients who have tumors in extremities or trunk
The first choice of treatment
Complete removal of the mass with appropriate margins without destruction.
Chemo was initially used only for Mets but now
It’s use after surgery is common
Surgery or radiation is used for
Local control within the first 3 months of treatment
What affects survival rates?
Tumor histology
Stage
Location
Survival rate for orbital lesions
90%
Patients with Mets
10-35%
3 year failure free survival rate is
77%
Amputation and pelvic exentefatin is reserved for
Salvaging of organ sparing treatment failures
With high radiation doses
Bone and soft tissue growth is affected unless growth plates excluded
