Flashcards in SP1c-acceleration Deck (11)
A change in velocity
Is acceleration a scalar or a vector?
What is the units of acceleration?
Meters per second squared
What does an acceleration of 10m/s mean?
Each second the velocity increases by 10m/s
What is the formula linking acceleration, velocity and time?
Acceleration = change in velocity / time taken
What if an object accelerates but gets slower?
It’s called deceleration and will be a negative value
What formula relates final velocity, initial velocity, acceleration and distance travelled?
(Final velocity)^2 - (initial velocity)^2 = 2 x acceleration - distance
Can also be written:
x= v^2 - u^2 / 2 x a
a = (v - u)/t
What does each letter stand for?
a = acceleration
v = final velocity
u = initial velocity
t = time taken for velocity to change
Why does an object in free fall move downwards?
Due to the force of gravity acting upon it
What’s acceleration due to gravity?
Constant 9.8 m/s^2 but can often be rounded to 10 m/s^2
