What is language?
A set of spoken, written, or signed words and the way we combine them to communicate meaning.
What facilitates the exchange of information?
Language.
When does language begin?
Prenatal, Infancy (<1), toddler (1-3), preschool (3-5).
What does the Latin word ‘Infans’ mean?
Unable to speak.
Define phonemes.
Short, distinctive sound units.
How many phonemes are approximately in English?
~40.
What are morphemes?
The smallest units that carry meaning.
What are free morphemes?
Morphemes that have meaning by themselves.
What are bound morphemes?
Morphemes that must attach to free morphemes.
Provide examples of bound morphemes.
- ’s’ (plural) * ‘un’ (negation)
What is a word?
A symbol that stands for something without being part of it.
Are words arbitrary?
Yes.
What are content words?
Words that provide content or meaning and typically carry lexical information.
List types of content words.
- Nouns: dog, car * Adjectives: cute, fast * Verbs: eat, drive
What are function words?
Words that give sentences their structure and describe relationships between elements in a sentence.
Provide examples of function words.
Articles & Prepositions
- Articles: the, a, an * Prepositions: in, on, at
Define a sentence.
A sequence of words constructed with morphemes, following the rules of syntax and grammar, to form a meaningful unit of communication.
What is phonology?
The system of sounds within a language.
What is speech segmentation?

What are the features of phoneme production?

What does voicing refer to?
Whether the vocal folds vibrate when producing a sound.

Where the airflow is restricted to produce sound.
What is manner of production?
How the airflow is restricted to produce sound.
What are fricatives?
Sounds with some restriction of airflow within the oral cavity.
