Spleen Flashcards
(25 cards)
Increased WBC is referred to as…?
Leukocytosis
Typically raised when infection is present
What is the normal long measurement for the spleen?
8-13cm
What is the normal volume of the spleen?
60-200 mL
What is polycythemia vera?
A slow growing cancer where blood marrow makes too many RBCs and thickens the blood, slowing flow, which can cause clots
What is sickle cell anemia?
Genetic mutation in African Americans which result in altered shape and phasicity of red blood cells
What does sickle cell anemia cause?
Increased blood viscosity, stasis, small vessel occlusion, infarction, and necrosis
In cases of portal hypertension, where does the splenic vein shunt blood?
Left renal vein
Where is polysplenia commonly found?
Greater curvature of the stomach
What is the most common benign neoplasm of the spleen?
Cavernous hemangioma
What is the most common clinical finding associated with a hemangiosarcoma involving the spleen?
Anemia
Malignancy of the spleen most commonly comes from which metastatic disease?
Melanoma
Multiple splenic infections put the patient at risk for which condition?
Candidiasis (m/c found in autoimmune compromised patients)
Hemangiosarcoma involving the spleen metastasize to which organ most commonly?
Liver
With splenomegaly, what should the sonographer also evaluate?
The portal vein for portal hypertension
With infective endocarditis, what splenic condition is associated with?
Abscess
Is it possible for a splenic infarct to cause no discomfort?
Yes, it is possible
A hemangiosarcoma would appear as which ecogenicity?
Hyperechoic, or complex
With granulomatosis, what sonographic finding occurs with it? (with shadowing)
Calcifications
What is granulomatosis?
An abnormal increase in the total number of granulocytes in the blood - this occurs in response to infection
Leukocytosis is defined as a white blood cell count above what?
20,000
An elevated hematocrit would occur with which conditions?
Infection, dehydration, shock, and polycythemia vera.
A decrease in hematocrit occurs in which conditions?
Hemorrhage, anemia, and leukemia
What does the spleen do with hemoglobin when it’s done?
Recycled into iron
What benign neoplasm is composed of lymphoid tissue?
Hamartoma
