Define English Language Learner
An English Language Learner (or ELL) is a student that comes from a non-English speaking home and background.
Explain English Language Proficiency
They are unable to communicate fluently or learn effectively in English, therefore will typically require specialized or modified instruction in the English language and in other academic courses as well. The goal of such instruction is a high level of English language proficiency.
What is Language acquisition?
Understanding how best to support ELL students requires knowledge of language acquisition, so you can support students in the development of fluent understanding of a language.
What is Intellectual disability/cognitive impairment/mental retardation?
A person with an intellectual disability is someone whose intellectual development lags significantly behind that of their age mates. This might be a developmental delay, or it might be a chronic condition.
What is a Learning disability?
A learning disability is a disorder in one or more of the basic psychological processes involved in understanding or in using language.
Define Handicapped
It could best be defined as a physical or mental impairment which substantially limits one or more major life activities
What is At-risk?
At-risk students are considered to have a higher probability of failing academically or dropping out of school. This term may be applied to students who face circumstances and social factors that could jeopardize their ability to complete school
What is an Exceptional child?
An exceptional child is one who has characteristics that differentiate them from the general population of students, particularly regarding learning.
Define Talented and Gifted (TAG, GATES)
Talented and gifted students show an exceptional level of performance in one or more areas of expression, but this is far more than just being “smart.” Gifted learners perform at or show the potential of performing at a remarkably high level of accomplishment when compared to others of the same age, experience, or environment. But there is a difference between being high-achieving and being gifted.
What is Attention deficit?
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder may cause problems staying on task and focusing on conversations or activities. Hyperactivity is a disorder of the central nervous system and can make it difficult for affected children to control their motor activities; they may move rapidly from one task to another without completing ay of them
Define Impulsivity
Impulsivity means they have impaired impulse control and delay of gratification.
