Pedagogy
“art and science of teaching.”
Content Areas
the different disciplines, such as fine arts, foreign languages, science, and social studies.
Curriculum
A curriculum is a “path” through a given content area.
Unit plan
A unit plan is a plan for a learning segment of related concepts and skills. Units are typically a few weeks in length, and at the end of a unit there is usually some sort of summative assessment—like a test or project—for students to synthesize and demonstrate their learning
lesson plan
A lesson plan is typically a day- by-day plan; most lessons are one class meeting in length.
Learning goals and outcomes
Goals (or outcomes) are usually broad learning targets for a unit plan. Goals indicate what students should know or be able to do at the end of the unit.
Objectives
Objectives are usually more focused learning targets for individual lessons, the measurable steps along the way to meeting the unit goals. Objectives are often phrased in terms of measurable targets for students and are often phrased as “Students will be able to…” or “I can…” statements.
rigorous
a rigorous course should be appropriately challenging for individual students or groups of students, not simply difficult. Think about the best courses you’ve ever taken—were they planned rigorously? Appropriately challenging? A rigorous course demands more than simple memorization and information recall; it should require that students to question their assumptions and think deeply.
