Content
all the knowledge and skills included in an academic discipline
Academic discipline
a particular subject area, such as reading, or geography, or biology, or physical education.
Central concepts
markers for the essential knowledge or skills for that discipline, such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division in arithmetic, or the concepts of atoms, elements, molecules, and compounds in chemistry.
Cross-disciplinary skills
skills include life skills such as collaboration, critical thinking, problem-solving, and creativity—skills that are not just useful in one subject.
Content standards
they are short statements that describe what students should know, understand, or be able to do in the academic disciplines at each grade level.
Instructional resources and curriculum materials
textbooks, guest speakers, field trips, and technology resources like websites and online videos. All these resources can help us present the content to students.
Learning progressions
a “road” or “pathway” that students travel as they progress toward mastery of the knowledge and skills needed for that content area.
Prior knowledge
all of the things the student already knows about the subject.
