Circadian rhythm
Body’s internal clock, controlling wakefulness and temperature.
Manifest content
The actual events and imagery within a dream.
Latent content
The unconscious thoughts and desires underlying the manifest content of dreams.
Sleep apnea
Sleep disorder where a person randomly stops breathing during sleep.
Night terrors
A sleep disorder that causes the sleeper to wake from NREM sleep suddenly with feelings of extreme fear, agitation, or dread
Insomnia
a sleep disorder in which the affected person may not be able to fall asleep, and keeps waking up during the night.
Narcolepsy
a chronic neurological disorder that affects the brain’s ability to control sleep-wake cycles
Delta waves
large, slow brain waves associated with deep sleep.
Sleep spindles
Bursts of neural activity that take place in stage 2 of NREM sleep.
Alpha waves
the relatively slow brain waves of a relaxed, awake state.
REM sleep
The period of sleep that is most associated with dreaming.
Wish fulfillment theory
States that dreams are a psychic safety valve to express otherwise unacceptable feelings.
Information processing theory
Dreaming is a way for the brain to deal with stress.
Physiological functioning theory
If the brain is inactive for long periods of time, neural pathways could be damaged
