Flashcards in STEP 1- RNA viruses Deck (19):
1

These are the two mneumonics to help remember the RNA viruses:
1. "i went to a RETRO TOGA party and drank FLAVORED CORONA and ate HIPPY CALIFORNIA PICKLES"
**Those are the ____ sense RNA viruses

2. "Always Bring Polymerase Or Fail Replication"
**Those are the _____ sense RNA viruses

3. There are two viruses not included in those mneumonics (you be DR!!)

1. Retroviruses, Togaviruses, flaviviruses, coronaviruses, hepevirus, caliciviruses, picornaviruses
**These are the positive sense RNA viruses

2. Arenaviruses, Bunyaviruses, Paramyxoviruses, Orthomyxoviruses, Filoviruses, Rhabdoviruses
**These are the negative sense RNA viruses

3. The two RNA viruses not included in those are the Reovirus and Delta virus...more on that later

2

Which RNA viruses are naked? Which are enveloped?

"always give CPR and a PAPP to naked Hippys"

Naked:
C-Caliciviruses
P-Picornavirus
R-Reovirus
Hippy- Hepevirus

Enveloped: all others

3

Which viruses have an icosahedral capsid? Which have a helical capsid?

Thankfully, all the positive sense viruses have an icosahedral capsid. All the negative sense viruses have a helical capsid

4

Medical importance of Reoviruses (2)
What do each cause

1. Coltivirus--Colorado tick fever
2. Rotavirus-- severe diarrhea in children

5

Medical importance of Picornaviruses (4)
"I went for a PEEK on the PERCH"

P-Polivirus
E-Echovirus: aseptic meningitis
R- Rhinovirus: cold
C-Coxsackievirus
H- Hepatitis A--> acute viral hepatitis

6

Coxsackieviruses cause (5)

1. Aseptic meningitis
2. Herpangina (mouth blisters and fever)
3. Hand, foot, and mouth disease
4. myocarditis
5. pericarditis

7

Medical importance of Hepevirus (1)

1. Hepatitis E

8

Medical importance of Calicivirus (1)

1. Norovirus

9

Medical importance of Flaviviruses (5)
1 major one, two important, two not so much

1. Hepatitis C
2. Yellow fever
3. Dengue fever
4. West Nile Virus
5. St. Louis encephalitis

10

Medical importance of Togavirus (3)
*One really important one

1. Rubella
2. Eastern equine encephalitis
3. Western equine encephalitis

11

Medical importance of Retroviruses (2)

1. HTLV-- T cell leukemia
2. HIV/AIDS

12

Medical importance of Coronaviruses (2)

1. Common cold
2. SARS

13

Medical importance of Orthomyxoviruses- 1

1. Influenza virus

14

Medical importance of PaRaMyxovirus- 4

1. Parainfluenza-- croup
2. RSV--bronchiolitis
3. Measles and Mumps

15

Medical importance of Rhabdovirus-1

Rabies

16

Medical importance of Filoviruses-1

Ebola

17

Medical importance of Arenaviruses- 2

1. LCMV (lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus)
2. Lassa fever

18

Medical importance of Bunyaviruses- 4 (good luck with these poof)

1. California encephalitis
2. Sandfly-Rift Valley fever
3. Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever
3. Hantavirus

19

Medical importance of Deltavirus

1. Hepatitis D--defective virus that requires HBV co-infection
