what are chronic stressors?
factors requiring adaption over prolonged period of time/repeated exposure
ex) daily hassles, chronic strain
what are acute stressors?
momentary changes in one’s life
ex) stressful life events
what are two main physiological arousal to stress?
- activation of sympathetic nervous system
- -> release of hormones
- -> increased blood pressure, fat deposits, and decreased immune function
- activation of hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenocortical
- -> increased production of corticosteroids
- -> decreased immune function, damage to neurons in hippocampus
what is allostatic load?
the constant fluctuation to the stress so that one can adapt and achieve homeostasis
what are the two stages of stress appraisal (judgement)?
primary: is what i’m facing rn going to be stressful?
(threat VS challenge)
secondary: is this sth that I can handle?
(resources available VS exceeds resources)
–> stress response when appraised as threat and exceeds resources
what are two kinds of stress mindsets (evaluation of the nature of stress itself )?
stress-is-debilitating mindset: the belief that stress has detrimental outcome
stress-is-enhancing mindset: the belief that stress has sth that helps improving outcomes
what are common behavirocal responces against stress?
smoking, poor diet, drinking alcohol, accidents as a result of distraction (Gaudiiii lol)
what is resilience and its outcome?
the ability to bounce back after experience stress symptom (unlike resistance coz it does not feeling stress symptom)
if one is unable to resilience… ex) childhood trauma
if one is able to cope…
result in Stress-related growth (positive chnages a person reports following stressful experiences)
what are the factors of resilience (3 big branches and inside moreeee) ??
personal strength/disposition
- mastery: to what extent are you the master of your own life?
- hardiness: sense of control, challenge appraisal, and commitment to life tasks
social support
- informational, tangible, emotional, and companionship
coping strategies
- emotion focused: to change emotion
- problem focused: to remove the cause of stressor itself
what are minority stressors? any specific outcome?
stress that related to social disadvantages; everyday discrimination, expectation of rejection
excess exposure to those stressors can produce negative health outcomes
–> that can be a potential explanation for health inequalities
what is stress proliferation?
experience of stress in one area can result in the experience of stress in another area of life
ex) having too much work can result conflicts and strains in romantic relationship
