What is Talent Identification?
A multi-disciplinary screening of athletes in order to identify those with the potential for world class success
What are talent ID schemes?
Once young talent has been identified it needs supporting in a number of different ways. NGB’s decide which athletes should receive funding, work with EIS and UK sport to provide elite performers with necessary support services. NGBs provide sport specific coaching badges. EIS provides the NGB’s with services in sports science, medicine innovation and research
What are the use of Talent Development and Support Services?
Potential performers can be screened, performers can be directed into sorts that suit their talents, development process can be accelerated. Efficient use of funding for talent ID schemes, Chances of producing medalists is increased, They provide a coordinated approach.
What are the disadvantages of Talent ID?
May miss late developers, Require high levels of funding, requires large numbers to be tested to be of use, No guarantees of success, Many sports compete for the same talent pool but high profile sports may attract the best performers
What makes Talent ID effective?
Simplicity of admin and record keeping, Systems are built on good practice and appropriate tests, well structured competitive programs and development squads provide a route of progression, Specialist high quality training facilities used, Funding is allocated to young up and coming athletes, Talent spotting undertaken via high quality coaches, high level support services, coordinated approach, equality of opportunity
