TEST 2 Flashcards
(30 cards)
Two components of tissue
- a discrete population of cells that are related in structure and function
- a surrounding material called extracellular matrix (ECM)
What are the four types of tissues?
-Epithelial tissue
-connective tissue
-Muscle tissue
-Nervous tissue
What are the functions of epithelial tissue?
-protection
-immune defense
-secretion
-transport into other tissues
-sensation
Where is epithelial tissue located?
Every internal and external body surface
What is the basic structure of epithelial tissue?
-Avascular (lacks blood)
-ECM found under basement membrane
How is epithelial tissue classified?
-Number of layers = simple vs. stratified
-Shape= squamous, cuboidal, or columnar
Function of simple squamous epithelia
-Rapid diffusion of oxygen and carbon dioxide
- Produces serous fluid
Where is simple squamous found?
-Air sacs of lungs
-Lines body cavities
What is the function of simple cuboidal epithelia
for absorption and secretion
Where is simple cuboidal epithelia found?
-kidney tubules
-glands
What is the function of simple columnar epithelia?
if it has microvilli- its for absorption
If it has cilia- its for secretion
Where is simple columnar epithelia found?
-small intestine
-uterine tube
What is the function of pseudostratified columnar epithelia?
if it is ciliated then it secretes and propels mucus
Where is pseudostratified columnar epithelia located?
-Nasal cavity
-trachea
What is the function of stratified squamous epithelia?
If it is keratinized- it protects from abrasion, and prevents water loss through skin
Nonkeratinized- Protects from abrasion
Where is keratinized stratified squamous epithelia located?
Epidermis
Where is nonkeratinized stratified squamous epithelia located?
Mouth and Vagina
What is the function of the stratified cuboidal epithelia?
It is used for secretion
Where is the stratified cuboidal epithelia located?
It is located in the sweat glands
What is the function of the transitional epithelia?
it is used for stretching
Where is the transitional epithelia located?
It is located in the urinary bladder
What are glands?
-Structure that makes and secretes a product
-Formed by epithelial tissues that grew inward into the connective tissue
What are exocrine glands?
They are glands that releases secretions to the apical surface through a duct
(think local actions)
What are endocrine glands?
They are glands that releases secretions into the bloodstream (distant actions)
