Challenges in communicating with children
- they know less
- know less words and less grammar
- words have a different meaning for them
- we may feel less confident if limited experience
- thinking skills less developed

Appropriate info given - minimise distress and uncertainty
Without info children form their own explanations or hear from other children
Challenges for carers
They can think:
- the child is taking too much of your time
- The child is not being clear or accurate
- The child is expressing ideas that they do not agree with
Non - verbal communication
- paralinguistics
- Facial expressions
- Gesture
-Touch - Non verbal ‘Leakage’
Clear communication with children
Receptive language is usually in advance of productive language
- Very young children use single words
- Older children use small groups of words, telegraphic speech
- Idiosyncratic, pronunciations, or meanings for example, all medical doctor
