a built up area with high population density that forms part of a city or town
Informal sector
the part of an economy composed of activities that produce goods or services for the market but are not officially recognized, taxed or regulated by the government

a process involving the movement of people from urban areas to rural areas

the rehabilitation of city areas that have fallen into decline

a sustainable city in which there are recycling, reuse and reduction of resources, renewable forms of energy and measures taken to reduce the ecological footprint
Urban ecological footprint
the amount of land required to sustain a population with the resources they need, and to assimilate their waste
Vertical zoning
an arrangement which involves stacking different land uses vertically within the same building(e.g. residential units above retail spaces)

a city with over one million residents
Range
the maximum distance that people are prepared to travel for a good or service
Threshhold
the minimum number of people required for a good or service to stay in business
Low-order goods
convenience goods bought frequently(e.g. bread, newspapers)
High-order goods
luxury goods bought or used infrequently(e.g. watches, cars)

the area served by a settlement
Bid rent
a theory that proposes that the price of land decreases as distance from the central business district(CBD) increases
Central Business District
the primary area of a city or town that is dedicated to commerce and business activities
