Q

How many sets of teeth do humans have in their lifetime and what are they called?

A

2 sets:
Deciduous
Permanent

2
Q

What are the 4 basic teeth type?

A
  1. Incisor
  2. Canines
  3. Premolars
  4. Molars
3
Q

Name a characteristic of incisors

A

They have a horizontal incisal edge

4
Q

Name a characteristic of canines

A

They have a single large cusp

5
Q

Name a characteristic of pre molars

A

Have 2 cusps of varying sizes
They are not found in deciduous teeth

6
Q

Name a characteristic of molars

A

Have 4 or 5 cusps

7
Q

What are cusps?

A

Chisel like edge on occlusal surface of tooth

8
Q

How many teeth are there in a deciduous dentation?

A

20

9
Q

Which teeth are found in the deciduous dentation?

A

2 upper and lower central incisors on both left and right side
1 upper and lower canine on both left and right side
2 upper and lower molarson both left and right side
So 20 in total

10
Q

How many teeth are there in a permanent dentation?

A

32

11
Q

Which teeth are found in the permanent dentation?

A

2 upper and lower incisors on both sides
1 upper and lower canine on both sides
2 upper and lower premolars on both sides
Upto 3 upper and lower molars on both sides

12
Q

What are the main differences between permanent and deciduous dentition?

A

Permanent dentition has 2 upper and lower pre molars on both sides deciduous dentition doesn’t

13
Q

How do we split the dentition?

A

Into 4 quadrants;
Upper right
Upper left
Lower left
Lower right

14
Q

What are the 3 main systems for tooth classification?

A
  1. The full anatomical name
  2. Alphanumeric/ Zsigmondy system
  3. FDI system
15
Q

How would you classify a tooth using the full anatomical name?

A

You’d give the tooth’s:
1. Position (Maxillary or mandibular)
2. The side (left or right)
3. The relative position (Lateral, central, 1st etc)
4. The dentition (deciduous or permanent)
5. Tooth type (incisors etc)

16
Q

What is the full anatomical name of the upper right adult first molar only found in adults?

A

The maxillary right 1st permanent premolar

17
Q

How would you classify a tooth using the Alphanumeric/ Zsigmondy system ?

A

Quadrants are names UR, UL, LL, LR
Individual teeth are numbered in PERMANENT teeth with central incisors being 1 and 3rd molars being 8
Individual teeth are given a letter in DECIDUOUS teeth with central incisors being A and 2nd molars being E

18
Q

How would you classify the upper right permanent canine using the Alphanumeric/ Zsigmondy system?

A

It would be the UR3

19
Q

How would you classify a tooth using the FDI system?

A

The quadrants are replaced with numbers
Deciduous:
UR=1, UL=2, LL=3, LR=4
Permanent:
UR=5, UL=6, LL=7, LR=8
Individual teeth are ndividual teeth are numbered in with central incisors being 1 and 3rd molars being 8

20
Q

How would you classify the upper right baby canine using the FDI system?

A

It would be: 1 3

21
Q

How would you classify the lower left 1st deciduous molar using the Alphanumeric/ Zsigmondy system?

A

It would be: LLD

22
Q

How would you classify the lower left 1st deciduous using the FDI system?

A

It would be the 3 4

23
Q

What is the medial surface?

A

Surface pointing towards the midline

24
Q

What is the distal surface?

A

Surface facing away from the midline

25
Q

What is the lingual surface?

A

Surface facing towards the tongue

26
Q

What is the palatal surface?

A

Surface facing towards the tongue

27
Q

What is the vestibular surface?

A

Surface pointing away from the tongue (towards the cheek)

28
Q

What is the buccal surface?

A

Surface pointing away from the tongue (towards the cheek)

29
Q

What is the occlusal surface?

A

The biting surface

30
Q

Which tooth type has a horizontal incisal edge?

A

Incisors

31
Q

What are chiesal like surfaces on the tooth called?

A

Cusps

32
Q

What is the surface facing toward the tongue called?

A

Palatal ot lingual surface

33
Q

Which tooth type has one large cusp?

A

Canines

34
Q

What os the surface pointing towards the midline called?

A

The medial surface

35
Q

Which tooth type has 2 cusps of varring sizes and is only found in decisuous teeth?

A

Pre molars

36
Q

What is the surface facing away from the tongue (towards the cheek) called?

A

The buccal or vestibular surface

37
Q
