Topic 1.1 Flashcards
(8 cards)
What’s Ionic Bonding?
When the atoms in a reaction donate or share electrons to gain a full outer shell
What’s Covalent Bonding?
When the atoms involved share electrons to become a compound
How many ° is an atom of water at
104.5
What’s a hydrogen bond?
Weak electrostatic intermolecular bonds between polar molecules using at least one hydrogen atom
Why is it important that water is a polar substance?
So that many ionic substances will dissolve in it
What are 3 important properties of water?
*It’s a transport medium
*Reaches maximum density at 4°C making the particles grow widely spaced(why ice floats)
*It’s slow to absorb and release heat
What does Cohesion mean?
Forces between the molecules mean that they stick
What is Adhesion?
Molecules that are attracted to different molecules
